Ashford University began as the St. Clare Boarding Academy in 1893, the vision of Father James A. Murray. The school was initially accepted only girls who either boarded at the school or attended the day school. Father Murray was assisted in the founding of the school by the Sisters of St. Francis. While providing secondary education for the girls, the sisters discovered there was a need for higher education in the Clinton, Iowa, area and founded Mount St. Clare College. The main focus of the school was to educate teachers, although it did offer a liberal arts education as well.
In 1979, the school joined St. Mary’s High School in Clinton to create what was then known as Mater Del High School. It has since become Prince of Peace Preparatory. Once the secondary school moved from the campus, Mount St. Clare was able to expand to four-year degree programs. The school became The Franciscan University in 2003, the same year they began offering master’s degree programs. Because there were schools with similar names in the area, the name was changed once again to the Franciscan University of the Prairies in 2004.
In March 2005, due to financial difficulties facing the school, Franciscan was sold to Bridgepoint Education who changed the name of the school to Ashford University. The sale also ended control by the Sisters of St. Francis. In 2016, Ashford University closed the Iowa campus due to inadequate enrollment and became an online-only university.
