It is Boston’s biggest, private national research institution. It strives to create a community of globally aware individuals who use newfound knowledge to solve dynamic issues in today’s society.
Originally an extension of the YMCA, Northeastern University was established in 1898 as an institution to serve a local population of immigrants. In 1903, the Automobile School opened and it offered courses to both men and women. The School of Law and Evening Polytechnic School were established in 1904. In 1907, the School of Commerce and Finance started for those seeking a business career. The school continued to grow and expand and in 1909 the programs began to provide students the opportunity to apply classroom concepts to real-life situations. The school changed its name to Northeastern College in 1916 and in 1922 it became Northeastern University of the Boston Young Men’s Christian Association. The university continued to expand and add additional schools of education and in 1935, it dropped the YMCA affiliation with its name. It became completely separate in 1948. Today, Northeastern is home to more than 15,000 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students. The U.S. News and World Report ranks Northeastern University number 40 in its National Universities publication and number six in its Most Innovative Schools publication.
