Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis

Mary Baldwin University offers one of the only Master of Science programs in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in the country. While other schools offer certificate programs, this is a full degree program that focuses on all areas of ABA therapy and work. The university designed the program to follow the guidelines of the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB), which is the organization that grants professional licenses to members.

To get their professional certification, students must take a BACB exam. The BACB requires that they take at least four courses: Basic Concepts and Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis, Behavior Analysis: Measurement and Assessment, Ethics and Special Considerations in Behavior Analysis and Fundamental Elements of Behavior Change and Change Procedures. Each of those courses is worth three credits. Those classes teach students how to work with their own clients and how to use ABA methods in the field.

Though the university accepts students with any type of bachelor’s degree into this program, it recommends that students major in a social sciences field such as psychology in college. The program is very small and accepts just six or fewer new students every year. Undergrads who want to work as ABA therapists can actually take some graduate classes through the university. They must receive permission from the department chair or head first though. Undergrads can take the BACB exam after taking the necessary courses, even if they didn’t complete a graduate degree.

The Mary Baldwin University ABA program focuses on teaching students more about those with an autism spectrum disorder and how to work with those clients. They learn how to assess their clients and determine their skills as well as where they need help and how to help those people through different therapy methods. It includes a Special Topics in Behavior Analysis course that focuses on one emerging topic in the field. Students also take a class called Societal Concerns for Behavior Analysis that looks at how society impacts those on the autism spectrum.

About Mary Baldwin University

Established in 1842 as the Augusta Female Seminary, Mary Baldwin University is a private university in Virginia that now offers coed courses. Mary Julia Baldwin attended the seminary and became one of its graduates. She also served as its principal and helped the school survive during the Civil War. Her commitment led to the university later naming itself Mary Baldwin Seminary after her. The seminary kept this name until the 1920s, which was when it became Mary Baldwin College. It most recently became Mary Baldwin University in 2015 due to the number of degree programs available. The university also uses the MBU name.

Though MBU offers some coed programs today, it’s also home to a division called the Mary Baldwin College for Women. This college offers programs designed just for women and allows them to study and work together without any male distractions. This is a residential school that requires students live on the campus or nearby. The university now offers a number of online and traditional graduate programs too. Some of its programs award students certifications or prepare them for professional studies such as law and medicine. MBU also offers a program for teenage girls that will help prepare them for college while they’re still in high school. More than 200 graduate students enroll or continue taking classes in the university’s programs every year.

Mary Baldwin University Accreditation Details

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCC) awarded regional accreditation to MBU the first time it applied and each time its accreditation came up for renewal. Renewal occurs every 10 years. Regional accreditation not only allows graduate students who want to use federal grants and loans to apply for financial aid, but it also helps them with any transfer credits they have. The university also has accreditation from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) and approval from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB).

Mary Baldwin University Application Requirements

MBU has an application deadline of July 31 for the fall semester. Students can apply by November 15 for the spring semester or April 15 to start in the summer. They must meet the requirements of the program and the university’s College of Education. The College of Education asks that students have a bachelor’s degree and an undergrad grade point average of at least 3.0 over at least the last 60 credits taken. It recommends that students take the Praxis Core exam and earn a score of 470 or higher. The college will also accept students who submit a score from a similar exam too.

Students must use the MBU online application. The first time they visit, the site asks them to create a new account. When they return, they can log in with the details they set up. Once the university receives this application, it will wait for the students to submit official transcripts from any college or university he or she attended and an official test score. The university uses those records to make sure that the student had a high-grade point average and that the individual completed a bachelor’s degree.

Tuition and Financial Aid

MBU understands that some students may not have as much money as others do, which is why it offers financial aid for graduate students. The university also announced in 2017 that it would freeze its tuition rates for the coming years. This ensures that students do not pay more than they expected for their courses. They will pay the same rate from the time they enroll until the semester they graduate. MS students pay around $11,500 a year. Part-time students pay $60 in fees and $495 per credit hour.

Students enrolling in the ABA program who also want to teach may qualify for a TEACH grant. There are federal programs designed for those willing to work in certain areas once they finish their degrees too. The university also has tuition waivers and scholarships that students can use in its graduate school. MBU encourages students to complete the FAFSA and use its own unique school code. This is the only way that graduate students can get federal loan money. Mary Baldwin University gives students the chance to apply for any outside scholarships and to use private loans also.
