Saint Joseph’s University is a private university that has a religious affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church. Founded in 1851, it has a close relationship with the Church. Located in Philadelphia, the campus is home to a small number of Jesuits who live and work on the campus. Those Jesuits work closely with students and help them learn how they can carry their faith with them when they graduate. Students can also take religion classes while enrolled in any degree program and attend services on the campus.

U.S. News & World Report included Saint Joseph’s University on several of its lists. It ranks as one of the best colleges in the northeast, as having one of the best part-time graduate business programs in the nation and as having one of the top graduate schools in the northern United States. Forbes ranks the university as one of the best schools in the U.S. and as being one of the nation’s best private colleges.

Many of its online programs also rank as the best in the nation because those programs provide students with loads of resources that they can use wherever they live. Also known at SJU and St. Joe’s, the university experienced a growth in enrollment over the last few decades. It now has an enrollment of more than 4,000 students at the doctoral and graduate levels and more than 4,800 undergrads.

Applied Behavior Analysis Programs

St. Joe’s offers an online program that is perfect for students who want to work with patients on the autism spectrum and those struggling with related conditions. This is a Master’s in Special Education with a concentration in applied behavior analysis (ABA). ABA is a type of therapy used to treat patients diagnosed with a variety of mental and emotional conditions as well as learning disorders. Graduates may work with those suffering from depression or an anxiety disorder, but they can also work with young adults acting out in negative ways.

The ABA concentration consists of six classes that are worth a total of 18 credits. Behavior Analysis and Consultation goes over the techniques that professionals use when talking with patients and their family members, while Ethics in Behavior Analysis is a class that looks at the ethical issues that these professionals face. The program also features other courses, including Basic Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis and Clinical Behavior Analysis.

Students enrolling in this program must have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher and a bachelor’s degree from an accredited school. They must also have some experience teaching students in an elementary, middle or high school setting. The program allows students to earn an autism spectrum disorders endorsement, a special education certificate or a Wilson Reading Systems certificate. To earn an endorsement or a certificate, students must take more classes beyond those needed to complete their degrees.

One advantage to the ABA degree program available at Saint Joseph’s University is that it’s an online program. Licensed teachers can keep working with their current students as they complete assignments and do other work in the program. It does not feature an internship or fieldwork component either, which gives students the freedom to only do work online without working in their own areas. Saint Joseph’s University designed this program for teachers who want to work closely with special education students and students struggling with other problems.

Saint Joseph’s University Accreditation Details

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is just one of the professional organizations that granted accreditation to Saint Joseph’s University. As this is a type of regional accreditation, it gives students the opportunity to transfer credits into a graduate or undergrad program that they earned from another school. Regional accreditation also gives students the right to use federal and state financial aid. All the engineering, technology and business programs that St. Joe’s offers have accreditation too.

Saint Joseph’s University Application Requirements

Any graduate student applying to St. Joe’s must meet some admissions requirements. They will need to use the university’s online application that asks about where they went to school and whether they have any experiences relating to the field they want to study. This form has a $35 application fee that is due when the student submits the form too. Students must submit official transcripts from any of the colleges they attended where they earned credits towards their degrees. This transcript must come in a sealed package from the school and have the school’s name and seal on it.

Other requirements include a resume, two letters of recommendation and a personal statement. The university asks students to write a letter that lists the goals the student has while enrolled in a graduate program and how attending St. Joe’s will help them meet any career goals they have. Each student will have their references mail letters of recommendation directly to the university. Some programs may ask that students attend an interview session too. They will meet with the director of the program and answer a series of questions to determine whether the student is a good fit for that program.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Most of the graduate programs that Saint Joseph’s University offers charge the same tuition rate. Students will pay $870 per credit hour. Some of the programs charge a slightly higher fee or a slightly lower rate. Students are also responsible for buying their own textbooks and any of the other supplies that they need in their classes.

Financial aid for grad students can take the form of grants, loans or scholarships. Grants and loans provide students with a specific amount of money that they can use to cover their tuition or any other costs. With loans, students will need to pay back the money given to them at a later date. The government offers unsubsidized loans and charge interest on those loans while the student is still in school. Students can make payments on their loans before they graduate or start making payments six months after they graduate.

Scholarships are available for graduate students studying certain fields. Students can look for external scholarships or contact the university to find out about internal scholarships that might be available. Saint Joseph’s University also allows students to work on the campus in positions that award them a tuition stipend and a regular paycheck.
