About University of Arkansas
Arkansas was still recovering from the Civil War when the University of Arkansas was established in 1871. The idea of a college while the state was still rebuilding was thought to be a foolish idea initially, but it proved to be an achievement during a time of political upheaval, bringing former rivals together to make the school successful. Initially, the school was established under the Morrill Act which offered states federal land they could sell or use to establish as a school that taught agriculture and mechanical arts.
There were two bids for the location of the school with Washington County providing the successful bid. Using funds from the sale of federal lands, the trustees purchased the 160-acre farm of William McIlroy, located in Fayetteville. After the construction of a temporary classroom, the Arkansas Industrial University began holding classes in 1872. It was not long before the trustees realized that students were arriving without the educational background they needed to succeed. Rather than turn students away, the school began offering preparatory classes in order to provide students the fundamentals they needed to succeed in higher education.
In 1899, students initiated a change in the name of the school to the University of Arkansas due to changes in the focus of the school. Although established for agricultural and mechanical programs, from the beginning, leadership downplayed those subjects, instead focusing on mathematical and classical education. The legislature pushed for the school to return to its original focus in 1887, but there was a general lack of interest among students and faculty. This led to a student push to change the name of the school to better represent the programs taught there.
During World War II, the school took part in the V-12 Navy College Training Program which offered students a path to a Navy commission. This helped offset the reduction in enrollment as students enlisted in the war effort. After the war, soldiers returning took advantage of the G.I. Bill and enrollment increased dramatically.
Today, there are more than 27,000 students enrolled at the university, representing all 50 states and 120 countries. Alumni of the school include Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, Doug McMillon, CEO of Walmart, Veronica Campbell-Brown, Olympic gold medalist and Darren McFadden, NFL player.
